Immediate loading means placing a temporary crown on an implant at the same appointment as the implant surgery, rather than waiting months for integration before anything is attached. It is often combined with immediate placement, where the implant goes in at the same visit the failing tooth is removed.
Why it is used
The appeal is obvious in the aesthetic zone: you leave with a tooth in place rather than a temporary appliance, and the total number of surgical visits is reduced. There is a biological argument too — placing a temporary crown immediately can help support the gum architecture around the site while it heals, which matters for the final appearance.
Who is a candidate
Not everyone. Immediate loading depends on achieving high primary stability — the implant must be firmly anchored in bone at the moment it is placed. That requires good bone quality and volume, and an absence of active infection at the site. Your dentist at Parkway Dental assesses this with a 3D scan beforehand, and the final decision is made during surgery based on how solid the implant feels once placed. If stability is insufficient, the safer course is a conventional healing period, and we will tell you that on the day.
What to expect
The tooth is removed as atraumatically as possible to preserve the surrounding bone. The implant is placed, often with graft material packed into any gap between implant and socket wall. If stability is adequate, a temporary crown is fitted the same day, deliberately shaped so it is kept out of your bite.
The critical instruction
The temporary crown is cosmetic, not functional. Micro-movement during the integration phase is the main cause of early failure, so you must not bite or chew on it at all. Keep to a soft diet on that side for the period your dentist specifies, usually several weeks. After three to six months of integration, the temporary is replaced with the definitive crown.
