A recall exam — the visit most people simply call a checkup — is the routine appointment that keeps your dental care on track between comprehensive assessments. It is shorter and more focused: your dentist at Parkway Dental is looking specifically for what has changed since you were last seen.
Why regular checkups matter
Most dental problems are silent at the stage when they are easiest to fix. Decay does not hurt until it approaches the nerve, and gum disease is typically painless until it is well established. A tooth that needs a small filling this year may need a crown or root canal if it is left for three. The purpose of a recall visit is to find those changes early, when treatment is smaller, cheaper and more comfortable.
What to expect at your visit
Your dentist reviews any changes to your health or medications, then examines your teeth and existing restorations for new decay, chips, wear or leakage around the edges of fillings and crowns. Gum health is reassessed and compared against your previous measurements — the trend matters more than any single reading. A soft tissue and oral cancer screening is repeated. Radiographs are taken only when clinically indicated rather than at every visit.
A recall appointment is very often paired with a professional cleaning, so many patients see both the dentist and the hygienist on the same day.
How often should you come in?
Six months is a common default, but the right interval is individual. Patients with a history of gum disease, a high decay rate, dry mouth, diabetes, or extensive dental work often benefit from three or four month intervals. Patients with consistently healthy gums and no recent decay may safely stretch to nine or twelve months. Your dentist will recommend an interval based on your actual risk rather than a fixed rule, and will revise it as your circumstances change.
